About Us
Simon Brock
I suppose you could say Simon’s journey to private dining was somewhat unconventional, but it is that very unique road that makes his food so exceptional. Simon’s love of food began at a young age, while cooking for his (rather large!) family – Sunday lunch for 20 or more people soon became pretty normal. From school he began working in hospitality, mostly ‘front of house’ where he could interact with customers and his team more, and taking pride in delivering a very high standard of service. He did however spend many hours working with the chefs in kitchens and learning techniques and flavour as he progressed in his career.
His mid-twenties were spent working for an organic food producer and here he learned the importance of good quality, sustainable produce, and still uses these values when preparing dishes for clients. Later he worked for a large chain restaurant as front of house manager (and sometimes the chef in the same shift), but the lack of individuality and care of delivering good quality food frustrated him – and perhaps that’s where he learned how not to do things!
Somewhere in between he became a wedding and events coordinator but he was never far from food, and more than once had to don whites and step into the kitchen to cover. It was at this point he realised that his real interest was in creating menus and experimenting with flavours and here was the turning point – to work out how he could design and execute bespoke and ever changing menus that challenged and excited him professionally without the confinement of a budget or a theme.
His thirties have taken him to Cumbria with a mixture of hard work, luck and perhaps fate (there is a longer version of the story including romance, a rucksack and Kilimanjaro - which he will be happy to tell you about when you meet him).

Our Services
The Lake District was the inspiration for Rock Cottage Dining – locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables from the foodie capital of Britain. Having been asked to cater for various events for locals of differing sizes and styles, Simon realised his passion was not just cooking the food but being creatively challenged with new menus and new flavours using his travels as influence to suit the needs of his clients. Private dining meant he could deliver bespoke personal service to the clients, but also produce high quality dishes in the kitchen – showing his skills at both ‘front’ and ‘back of house’. Repeat customers mean that he has had to continuously come up with fresh ideas and new flavours, including specialist menus, international cuisines and ever changing menus for an annual vegan retreat, ensuring he is kept on his toes. Rock Cottage is known for dinner parties to trial new food – and it certainly has a long list of willing neighbours to attend them. Simon is a bespoke private dining chef for the Graythwaite Estate, as well as the local area and can therefore cater for anything from a buffet to fine dining menus. Feel free to contact us and we hope to see you soon.

As the founder of a Cancer Nutrition and Awareness concept in Cumbria, I needed an experienced, creative and reliable chef to help me with a specific phase of the project. It was imperative that this chef had an in depth knowledge of local, seasonal ingredients, and understanding of ‘flavour’ and ‘taste’; two essential aspects of eating with the illness.
I was told by a trusted catering confidante that Simon of Rock Cottage Dining in Satterthwaite was just the man. He certainly was. I needed an expert to cook a Herdwick Lamb dish with accompaniments in keeping with a diet for people going through cancer treatment; in particular chemotherapy.
Simon, not only researched and sourced the very best Cumbria had to offer, but he produced a fantastically beneficial protein and calcium packed meal, fortified with tremendous vitamins, to showcase what this project is all about.
Yet despite being very busy, with his bespoke fine dining business, his communication throughout the week leading up to it, was first class in every way. I can’t thank him enough.
